a ferry sank off of hong kong's island. the ferry was carrying more than 120 passengers when it collided with another boat. many were thrown into the sea as the vessel began to sink. more than 50 people have been taken to the hospital with injuries. power company hong kong e llectc chartered the ferry. it was taken employees and family to watch fireworks. the hong kong government has promised to investigate. >>> the united nations fund has marked older persons with celebrating life expectancies. the fund's executive director launched the report in tokyo. it says rising living standards are creating older societies. it estimated by 2050 one in five people in the world will be over six. that's up from one in nine today. he also warned that populations in developing countries will age faster than those in developed countries. he says 80% of the elderly will live in developing countries by 2050. >> if the developing countries of the world don't begin to put social policies in place, it might catch up with them so fast that it might become a challenge. >> the u.n. official said countries shou

and friends of the 30 people killed in hong kong gathered today to mourn the dead. people gathered -- the pleasure ship sank in just minutes in hong kong's worst maritime accident in decades. friends and relatives through flowers and paper money into the water at the accident site today. hong kong also observed a three- minute silence for the dead. back in the states, a 19-year- old man is behind bars accused of stabbing four people, including a city bus driver. austin william van hagen yelled racial slurs and stabbed one person five times. he reportedly jumped back on to the bus and stabbed another passenger five times and then stabbed the bus driver in the stomach. teacher union leaders announced that 75% of members approved a new deal. the chicago board of education must now approve the contract. last month week-long strike at 350,000 students at a school in the nation's third largest district. still to come, aspirin may have more benefits than once thought. we already knew it helps to protect against heart attacks. but it is good for our brain. details in medical alert. >> the

better about the prospects they face in 2013. >> dave malpass, on the other hand, hong kong's stock market is hitting a 52-week high today. and that is sparking a lot of people to say you know what? we are going to have a soft landing in china, they're not going to go below 7 1/2% gdp, and we're going to come out of this okay. are we too pessimistic about -- when we talk global, i'm not stalking europe. i'm talking china. that's a major factor. what do you think? are you buying hong kong stocks? >> i like hong kong among the emerging markets. you know, the emerging markets as a whole, meaning including brazil and russia and so on, have actually been weak, but the asia ones are stronger. and the reason for that is because china is managing to engineer some bottom. they're still reflecting the global slowdown. china's being hurt a lot by europe and by the u.s. weakness, but they've found a way to get more of the growth to come from their consumers. and that's enough, people are celebrating in hong kong. so i think that is a stabilizing force in this global recession risk that we're in

when i was working in hong kong, we never found any evidence on that. but there is a strong belief in that. second thing i want to say is language barriers. we found out in ones we have attacked in san francisco we find there is a huge limitation in this language services. i'm helping and actually i was donating a lot of my personal time in translating personal documents because they don't have an officer who have capacity of getting document translated. i think i covered most of my points because -- >> i just want to say thank you for your work. i really believe you go across the entire city above and beyond and you have done a lot of volunteering of your time. i'm sure you have done this a lot. i just want to say thank you for your service. it is really important. we rely a lot on you in the city. there should be more of you in terms of doing what you are doing so thank you. >> i think you are right. should be more of me but unfortunately there's only one of me and the entire san francisco say also can't find another one, even in sfpd or the d.a.'s office. >> can i just say that
